The material is callec "Potting Compound" and is readily available.
It is intended to be a PERMANENT Sealing method and is Not intended to be removable.
A set of dental picks and and a dozen or more hours of labor will remove 95% of it.
You will be an expert at Fossil recovery by the time you are done.
Gettiing it open is only half the battle.
Now you will need to create a schematic and a test fixture to actually repair it.
Unless you intend on repairing dozens of modules, it might be less expensive to outright replace it or have someone with the experience do the repair work.

The ignition timing is controlled by physical Tabs on the Alternator Rotor within the engine.
The ignition module has no control over the timing. It just fires when the trigger pulse arrives.

To serve curiosity the compound can be removed with a sharp cutter knife. Cut straight lines crosswise and peel out smal cubes of compound. Be careful and don't apply too much force for your own safety and the safety of the electronic components. Yes, it takes a while but it's not such a big thing. A typical defect seems to be a lack of solder were the external connectors sit on the PCB. In some case resoldering cures the defect.

Hi I'm RUSSELL, l though l had problems with my CDI, like hard to start when cold, not firing and no spark. After several hours l tried something different,l made a earth strap from the battery to the earth cable on the CDI and did that make a difference, l have no trouble starting at all now.
