A friend with an older 912 called last night and advised he had no electrical power. I ask if he had checked for loose wires or ground which was affirmative.
Could both modules be bad?
Thanks,
Bob

    Bob,

    Both modules going bad at once is possible but highly unlikely. Both mag systems are totally independent of each other. The only thing they have in common are the flywheel magnets and possibly the grounding circuits. If your friend has a rotary type kill switch with right, left, and both mags all in the same switch, that would be the first easy place to look. That switch is one part of the wiring that would be common to both circuits.

    One other place to look, and only because it is common to both circuits, is the ground wire coming from each module. In most installations these ground wires go from both modules to a single screw on the engine block near the modules. A bad ground there could affect both modules.

    I've never run into the problem of both circuits failing at once, so I'm pretty much guessing here. Hope it helps.

    I'm with Bill, this is most likely just a bad wire or it's connection.

    Bob,

    Will the engine crank but not start or is the whole electrical system dead? If the engine will crank I would pull both plugs from one cylinder, ground them one at a time to the block and visually check to see if you are getting an arc across the gap when you crank the engine. If you are getting an arc from one plug only, at least you'll know which circuit is bad. If you are getting arcs from both plugs, you might want to start looking for a fuel problem. Unlike a car, the Rotax arc is hard to see except in dim light.

    Bill;
    Sounds logical to me, I'll pass it on.
    Many thanks,
    Bob
