I am currently looking at an aircraft with a Rotax 912 UL serial# 4152865 would like to know what it came with from the factory.

I think its a 1994 vintage, It only has 70 hours on it but it is timed out., more than 15 years. what is entailed in getting it current again

and roughly how much that might cost in parts assuming nothing else major is wrong.

At the very least all the rubber parts (fuel/cooland/oil lines) need to be replaced, as well as the fuel pump(s), and the carberetors will need to be totally disassembled and refurbished.  But the big question is, how has it been stored all these years?

A check of the newest MML, maintenance manual line, shows that this serial was sold with a 1200 hour or 15 year recommended TBO.  Given that this is an experimental engine it would really depend on your rules where you are.  In some countries you must have it overhauled as per the Rotax requirements.  In others perhaps not, check you authorities wherever you are.

As a practical matter you must consider that the engine may have corrosion internally, especially since it has been sitting so long since new.  The least you should do in my opinion is to have it go to a qualified Rotax shop for complete inspection and replace all the gaskets and seals (mostly it is O-rings)  The gearbox has a lot of metal as well as the crank and camshaft that need to be corrosion free.  The good part is that is is unlikely to have any problem with the cylinders as they are not cast iron.  Depending on where this was kept and how it was stored you might not have any problem with the valves or valve guides and seats however they must be inspected.  Below is the info found in the MML on the TBO time.

912 UL from 4,152.667 up to and incl.

    4,404.717

    1200 hr. or 15 years,

    whichever comes first (1

The answer to what an actual overhaul would cost is about 50 to 65% of a new engine price.  The formula is must the same as a certified engine overhaul formula.  So if a new 912 is 18,000 USD a full approved overhaul would run about 12,000 USD.  A lot depends on the labor rates and if some of the on condition parts require change.  One should also factor in outdated parts as engine improvements over the years and the desire to upgrade might just make it too expensive to consider.  On the other hand as experimental most will just refresh what is needed and inspect if that is permitted where you fly.

    Cheers
