2007 Rans 7SS, 912ULS,

I'm stranded in GJT trying to figure out a starting issue.

I flew a 2.5 hour flight parked the airplane for about 3 or 4 hours then tried to start.  It turned  the prop for about 4-5 seconds, with no start.  Gave it 30 seconds or so and tried again, This time it only turned the blade maybe 2 rotations and sounded like the battery was depleting so I stopped.  Gave it a few minutes and tried again. wouldn't turn the blade more than a few inches.  I gave up and started looking into battery issues.

I charged the battery and tried again. now I only hear the starter solenoid clicking with no starter action or prop movement.  If I move the prop through so there isn't any engine compression the starter will move the blade about an inch then stop.  pulled the battery and charged took it to the battery shop a tested great.  tried to jumpstart the airplane and still no movement. I checked all connections from battery to starter  pulled all connections and cleaned with emery cloth.

checked voltage at the starter its getting 14V at the starter when I turn the key.

At this moment I'm thinking its the starter because that's probably the hardest thing to change.  Also last night i tried to turn it over and tapped on the starter and it would turn the blade 3/4 turn or so when i tapped on it. So I started to pull the starter and when I removed the bottom 8mm nut and started the allen bolt out. Then the back of the starter came open just a hair and oil started dripping out. This surprised me. so tightened it back up, cleaned it up and ordered a starter.  (The starter in question is a Rotax starter. and the HD model)

Anyone think of something I'm missing?  I'm a noob so sorry if this post sounds as such.

The starter oil seal failed and engine oil has filled your starter causing it to stop working. You need to replace the oil seal P/N 250 130 or send it to your local Rotax repair center - https://www.rotax-owner.com/en/support-topmenu

    See Attachment for parts breakdown

A NEW Starter will get you home the soonest, but if you flush the Oil out of your existing starter and replace the Oil Seal(7) and the Carbon Brush  Assembly(14), it will most likely work like new again and be a less-expensive fix.
I would not throw out the old starter. It is repairable.

Ok thanks. Thanks for the input guys.  so would you, agree that I could flush it out reinstall and get home. then replace seal and brushes there.  don't want to do further damage though.

I pulled the starter and it dumped oil all over there was quite a bit in it.  When I took it apart it was immediately obvious that it was destroyed.  It was full oil and copper sludge. there was sludge buildup almost a mm thick in some places.  2 of the pickups on the commutator are destroyed looks as though they melted and maybe welded to the brushes as 2 of the brushes are broken and it also broke the mount for one of the brushes.

    ordered a new starter.

Thanks again for all the input!! was very helpful
