Food for thought;
This can happen if it was VERY limited in nature. A rare occurrence could be some metal coating from a lifter. Was there any other metal in the filter? I can’t imagine any if there wasn’t any on the mag plug.

It does not appear that there is any other metal. All of the metal in the filter mat was shiny and magnetic.

Was there only a couple of specs or was there quite a bit.

Certainly a lot more than what was normal for the previous 500 hours on the engine. I've attached a photo - hopefully you can zoom in and see more detail. This is typical for all of the pleats of the filter mat.
