Re: 912 ULS Oil Pressure Switch
by Rotax Wizard » one year ago
Hi Karl
Please look at the Service Information attached. Rotax has never supplied a "switch" to be mounted on the oil pump in place of the oil pressure sensor. The SI will show you the only versions of oil pressure "sensors" they have supplied over the past 30 plus years. The picture you took is not any of the configurations from Rotax. You will need to find out who installed this to check for any additional information. I have never seen this on a Flight Design before. it seems odd to not have an oil pressure sensor located at the oil pump. A switch was sometimes added to engines but always with the oil pressure sensor attached. oil pressure activated switches were sometimes used to activate the hobbs meter on some aircraft.
Cheers

Hi Carl,
I agree this sensor has nothing to do with Rotax. Flight Design didn't use these to my knowledge and supplied their aircraft with the Rotax VDO one. This looks like an aftermarket install.

Hi Carl,
perhaps you like to to try to disconnect the wiring completely, check what the lamp does and draw a conclusion from that.
If the switch’s normal status was off the lamp would show the same behavior as with wiring off, I think.
Besides, personally I do like to know the oil pressure value (instead of OK or NOK). Perhaps this replacement requirement is a chance for you to “upgrade” your instrumentation in one go.
Regards
Peter

I have a replacement switch from Airmasters (the UK Flight Design distributor) to get me back up in the air but it's going in for a big upgrade in 4 weeks anyway so all being replaced (Dynon) and will have an analogue sensor going forward, I also want to know the actual pressure, everything in there now is 22 years old so all going in the bin!
Cheers,
Karl

A UK FDCT explains a lot. These and other FD planes were different than FDCT's that came to the US and Canada. Partly due to weight requirements due to country regulations.
