Lane A & B lights on after start

Here's the scenario:
Activated start power switch, waited for Lane lights to extinguish, checked gauges - all OK, pressed start button and both Lane lights immediately illuminate. I shut down the engine, wait a few seconds and try again. It starts OK on the 2nd attempt.
If I immediately release the start button when the Lane lights come on (before engine starts) it will start OK and run fine on the 2nd attempt. Any idea on what could be causing this?
