Hi all...the spark plug debate will never end and that's ok however we need to be fully informed.  NGK does not approve their plugs or connectors for aircraft.  This was why Rotax had to seek an alternate supplier and for that to work they have to be a private label.  In this case they are branded ROTAX.  If you are flying a certified or SLSA you should use only the Rotax plug.

Lastly a warning.  The market has been flooded in the past few years with fake NGK plugs.  Just check that out online if you don't believe me. (do a search for " fake NGK")  I have seen a number of these and the failure rate is rather alarming.  This is especially bad on the iridium tip versions (cause they make more money and you think they might be better)  Be very wary of whom you get such supply from.  Just saying.

    Cheers

Hey guys, I am asking for clarity on this subject after reading through the three pages. I am an A&P and an iRMT. This weekend I was mentoring my apprentice (nephew) and I told him to be extra careful and not drop a sparkplug as I could only get one mail order and that would take a few days. All went well and we went flying when we were done.

I emailed my supplier and while I knew about the Rotax change and branded plugs, what we had were Rotax plugs with the screw tops removed.

I awoke this morning thinking I should get a few of them spares for my kit incase I ever dropped one or came across a bad one, I wouldn't be grounded.

So it seems that only the new Rotax solid top ones are available and would require the caps changed as well (update? upgrade?)

Well, sHsss  sugar, that is going to be quite a bit expensive like $700 expensive if all 8 have to be R&R if ole butter fingers drops a single plug.

Any suggestions? Does anybody know of a honey hole for a few of the old Rotax branded plugs?

I should have gotten the part number of these old version... Anybody know what the p/n is?

    Hi Kurt,

You can buy the NGK DCPR8E plugs almost anywhere. They are the 4339 type plug where the cab will unscrew. Local auto shops have them, Amazon and motorcycle shops have them, ect..... Some places are definitely cheaper than other so shop around.

LOL Roger at it again.  You will never recommend the new plug.  Even for an SLSA or certified you will continue to recommend motorcycle plugs.  Do you do this with oil filters also?  Oil?  How odd.

Please at least wrap your opinions with a statement that this is your view.  Most of us know full well why Rotax has a brand name pliug.  I am not asking anyone to like it.  Anyone who wants to buy alternative plugs to the factory approved ones is on their own, fair enough for anything experimental. The spark plug change is more than 5 years old now.
