starter solenoid diode?

I find one post on this subject from 2008 with one answer indicating no diode is needed on the starter solenoid for the 912is. I am wondering if there is any updated information on this? Has anyone had issues without the diode such as arcing? Has added the diode?

I can tell you I do not have one across the starting solenoid on my Van's RV-12iS, but Van's does have us install one across the master relay. Over 140 hours and no issues so far.
