As you may have read in my other recent topic about RPM drop and vibration, I attempted to download the data through BUDS and it failed. The long typical download and the data was blank.

OK an old computer so I downloaded the BUDS software again on a newer computer. On my old computer it was the BUDS version 3.0.1 from this last January 2022 when I downloaded it. Since it was an old computer, windows 7, I decided to eliminate all possible problems and update to my newer windows 10 computer. Downloaded the latest version of BUDS and now it is 3.1.0 updated 29.10.2020, odd. Wonder why I downloaded the old version 3.0.1 in January 2022 and the revision date on the new software 3.1.0 is 2020…….

Anyway, both the old computer with 3.0.1 and the new computer 3.1.0 both downloaded the ECU through BUDS, typical time to download and no data showed up on BUDS. Blank. Click on older data and it comes up fine. Typically, after I download the data I “clear fault logs” but not the data lags for a fresh look at the fault logs.

Drilled down into the zip downloaded file and see the zip file size of the old readable files and the new blank files is about the same size 5 to 6 MB. Looked into the files and plenty of data in the lane A and B data files but nothing in BUDS.

Still no LOG Viewer available which is what the experts use to look at the data. I tried to get this and it is highly guarded. Tried to get training to get it and none available. Rotax does such a good job with detailed manuals for every thing except the fuel injected downloaded data. I do not understand this.

Anyone else have this problem with blank BUDS files?

    Hi Paul,

Just a thought, but are you downloading the files to the default location or did you change that?  The buds log viewer will only look at files in the default location.  I don’t remember the default file path, but I remember it was buried pretty deep. Also, are you getting the “download complete” message at the end of the download or is it possible the download is failing at the last minute?  Often, mine completes 99% of the download and bails out, leaving an unreadable file.  It’s really irritating to start over. I’ve verified the integrity of my wiring and connection cable, changed computers, reinstalled software, put the aircraft on a battery charger while downloading, and still I get a successful download only about 60% of the time.  The only thing that has helped is changing my attitude… I’ve gone from being frustrated about it to happy it works at all.

I should say that I have been using the BUDS program for  6 years now with thousands of hours and it has been flawless for downloading data and isolating problems. Have finally come over the hill from carbs to fuel injection. Perhaps I have been lucky up to this point.

Three attempts. Everything looks good, each of the 7 steps completed 100%. File name pops up on the left, titles for the columns come up just like they always have but no data. Perhaps I should be more patient and keep trying till it works. it appears there is data in the CSV files just not populating in BUDS.

    Thanks Jeff appreciate your comments.

I downloaded the brand new (16 March) BUDS version 4.0.0 yesterday onto a pentium 2Ghz laptop running Windows 11. I first downloaded it onto a memory stick, then installed from that. I disabled virus protection and security while I did this.

    Downloading worked like a charm.

You just follow the prompts to put the ECU into maintenance mode, then hit the "extract Logs" command. There are messages detailing the download stages and a completion bar detailing progress through to 100% for A and B faults and data. It didn't take more than 10 minutes. I made up and used a "Y" cable.

As warned in the SI and by posters here; do not fiddle with the directory paths to anything because I'm not sure how robust that part of the software is.
