912iS - Oil Consumption

I've got 140hrs on my 912iS and I too have oil consumption. It isn't as high as yours but I have to refill the tank more than I was lead to believe I would need when I first started flying. I haven't been able to locate a leak anywhere and the bottom of my plane is clean aside from normal exhaust soot. Now I don't worry too much about it and just top it off with 200ml when I feel like i need to.

Ive found that depending on the engine temp and environmental temps, I can get some pretty significantly different readings off the dipstick and I often find oil remnants on the blowoff tube as if there was too much oil in the tank even those my measurement didnt show that...

Im curious what others have experienced as well!

Are you guys burping the engine before taking your dipstick readings?

Yes. Ive burped the engine with cold oil and gotten a lower reading. Then flew. Burped the engine without adding anything with hot oil and gotten a much higher reading. Is that not what you've seen?

Checking the oil level by burping is not an exact science. Like you said if it’s hot or cold or how many rotations of the prop and other factors all play a part. Even each engine has its own personality. One may burp in 2-3 rotations and another may take 20+.

I wouldn’t get too worried about an EXACT tank level. So long as it stays at or above the halfway area on the flat part of the dip stick you should be fine.

when you do an oil change use all three liters of the Aero Shell and that should put you at the top of the flat area on the stick. If you use an American bottled oil measured in ounces then remember three quarts is 8 ounces less and you’ll need to add that.

My point was, if you don't burp, and then add oil because it looks low, you are actually putting in excess oil that will probably just go overboard. And then it will still look low the next time you check the stick (without burping).
