This topic surfaced on the Van’s Air Force forum and nobody seems to have an authoritative answer, so, hopefully one of the experts here can answer this question…

There are significantly different torque values indicated for 912 ULS vs. iS engine mounting bolts.  Both engines call for the identical size and grade of bolts, but the torque value identified in the ULS MMH is 60 Nm, vs, only 40 Nm in the iS MMH.  See attached screenshots from each.  If the value wasn’t so significantly different it might not be an issue, but 50% higher for the ULS causes some concern.  And the ULS MMH calls for the use of Loctite, which the iS manual doesn’t.

I start my CI next week, and would really like to get a good answer. One of the VAF responses noted that the ULS MMH is more current than that for the iS, but have no idea if it’s changed since the iS MMH was published.  Anyone know the answer here?

It seems that the 912iS manual may be incorrect and not updated regarding the bolt torque specification and the inclusion of Loctite. The Rotax 915iS manual reflects what the 912 and 914 manuals state for the bolt torque (60 NM) and the use of Loctite. The correct torque specification is 60 NM, and it should be accompanied by the use of Loctite 243.

We have also encountered a similar issue with the valve cover bolt torque specification for the 912iS.

Thanks for the reply.  I used the more conservative 40 Nm value during my condition inspection and was already afraid I was going to break them.  Guess I’ll have to trust the engineers.

And if you want to add another inconsistency to your list, see my recent post questioning exhaust pipe flange nut torque.  MMH shows 12 Nm and the IM shows 15.

Sorry, but I have to ask a follow-up question in your response regarding the valve-cover bolt torque.  Once again there is an inconsistency between the ULS 10 Nm and the iS 12 Nm torque recommendations.  The M10 engine-mounting bolts are much larger than the M6 valve-cover bolts, so would expect them to have a higher torque value, so, can you confirm Rotax is really recommending the same 60 Nm torque value to be used on these smaller valve-cover bolts?  That’s just a very large change.  Thanks in advance for humoring me.

I apologize for any confusion caused by my previous response (I made edits to ensure clarity). My intention was not to imply that the valve cover bolts should be torqued to 60NM. Instead, I was referring to the fact that we have come across inconsistencies in torque specifications between different manuals.
