I saw on Rotax's new very cool aviation engine configurator online that there is a silicone hose option for the 915iS, which removes the every 5 year requirement. Apparently rubber hoses must be changed every 5 years, but silicone hoses are "on-condition." Question is: Is there any reason you couldn't put the 915iS's silicone hoses on the 912iS? I would like to do this on my next 5 year rubber change if possible.

    Hi there

From a technical viewpoint they would work however if you are flying a certified or even a Special Light Sport, VLA or Primary category aircraft you may require the aircraft manufacturers approval to make that change.  If you are flying experimental then go for it, should be no problem. Be sure to note that they are changed to silicone in your logbook and I would even include the reference from the Rotax manual for the continued airworthiness inspection.  (on condition with silicone hoses)

    Cheers

Noticed in the new IPC that silicone hoses are now offered. Can you confirm if the new rubber pad under the expansion tank is silicone too?

The pad under the coolant expansion tank is still made of rubber and falls under the 5-year rubber replacement requirements.

How would one even know if the rubber pad under the coolant expansion tank was changed during the 5 year rubber service? My guess is that would be very very easy for an A&P to miss, especially given the quality of the majority of A&Ps serving GA today.

The part is called out specifically by the Rotax Maintenance Manual Line  (MML) In the  work order it should show this part and a notation on the log should list it.  If they only say they changed the hoses I would assume they did not change the pad.  Hopefully they will have in addition to the A&P licence a type specific training to Rotax iRMT.  The iRMT Service class will make them aware where the call out is and what is involved in a 5 year rubber replacement.

    Cheers
