I've purchased a 912is engine from a Kit plane company who is parting a plane out for a customer who will not complete it for medical reasons. Once I decided I wanted to purchase the engine they removed the engine and components from the plane for crating to be prepared for shipping. The engine is supposed to include the items that came with it from Rotax as it was new when installed but never completed. There is a bit of confusion on which components came with the engine and just the identification of some of the components. I'm trying to get some info on what comes with the engines typically and maybe some pictures or an inventory list so I have a reference to do an inventory when it arrives so if anything is missing they know what to look for as they've assured me they will send anything they've missed. Is the wire harness more than one piece? I only ask this so I can make sure there aren't any smaller sub harnesses or couplers/plugs that could be missed. Are there any components other than the engine, oil tank, ring mount, fuel pumps, wire harness, fuse box, ECU, starter/relay, radiator/expansion tank, exhaust system and manual/paperwork? I know they don't typically work with Rotax and may not have installed the engine so they aren't completely familiar with it. Thanks for any and all help

I think your list has it pretty much covered. In fact I don’t think the oil and coolant radiators are part of the engine package as such. You typically order them separately, but try to get them of course.

You can step through the Engine Configurator on the Rotax site and on the last page you can see a graphic representation of your choices as you select or de-select them (see link below). So exactly what you get with the engine differs with the options selected. If you look in the 912iS illustrated parts manual section 76-50-00 page 73, you can see that the wiring harness is made of many components, but they are essentially all connected together as a single assembly.

    Hi Jared

Just a heads up.  An OEM, Kit company or full aircraft assembly, technically is not allowed to sell the engine outside of a full aircraft.  It would be a breach of his agreement with the distributor as they are given a good price on the promise it is for them to make aircraft or sell a kit with that engine.  If this is a imported engine from Europe the engine serial will show up as for a OEM and the distributor for that country will have to perhaps pay a punitive fee to Rotax for that.  I am not sure what the implications would be for warranty, perhaps ask your seller what the situation is.

    Cheers

My understanding is they are selling the engine for a private individual who is losing their medical. Thank you for the information.

Thank you for your very helpful comment. I’ve found it extremely hard to find information on Rotax engines believe it or not. The configuration tool is great for getting a visual of the components.

    RW,

I would think that because the engine was purchased with an aircraft kit by a private party, at that point the engine became eligible to be resold privately without penalty. It sounds like the company the aircraft was purchased from is just trying to help the guy sell his parts since he can’t finish the aircraft.
