RADIO INTERFERENCE:
TO THE POINT THAT MY PANEL MOUNT ICOM A-20 AND INTERCOME SYSTEM ARE USELESS WHEN MY 618 REAR MOUNTED ROTAX IS RUNNING.

PLEASE NOTE: FERITE FILTERS HAVE BEEN USED WITH 0 IMPROVEMENTS
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS???????
1) Relocate the grounding block somewhere in the back of the aircraft which most of the grounding of the instruments and panel switches now are connected to and is located with in inches on the back of the instrument panel including the radio,
2) ELIMINATE THE GROUNDING BLOCK & Extent all above mentioned grounds into a shielded conduit and ground them all at the battery’s negative?? Battery is located at the rear of the aircraft.
3) Things to consider : I had heard that some instruments need to have their own separate grounds I may have some of these as the EIS for ex., Now if they are grounded into the battery’s negative will that create any problems??
4) Instruments on board or devices that are grounded: 2 strobes, navigation lights, landing lights, collision avoidance system, gps, panel mounted transponder with mode c, elt,
3 cigarette lighter sockets, EIS which is going bananas any time I use the push to talk switch on the radio, electric fuel pump, electric compass that is never correct due to the electrical interference. I don’t think that I left anything out, but having a general aviation panel mount radio and not being able to communicate even with the back seated passenger is a big disappointment, times came that I try to use a portable radio just to announce my intentions (knowing my above issues) and the receiving radio couldn’t even hear a word out of what I was saying due to the noise interference.
Gentleman? Can anyone assist?
Any consideration or input (before I start doing things) will be greatly appreciated,
Reghards

    Yanis,

When you use the hand held radio is it using its own batteries and antenna? If the hand held radio is totally independent of the aircrafts power supply and antenna and is still getting interference from the engine, I would take a good look at the spark plugs, plug caps and plug wires. loose or corroded wiring in these areas could cause arcing and lots of radio noise. Spark plug caps are usually the worst offenders. Check to see that they are screwed onto the plug wires tightly and that they fit the plugs tightly and are clean inside. Check the wires where they screw into the ignition modules for looseness also. Clean the outside of the wires and the ceramic portion of the plugs. Dirty wires and plug ceramics can cause arcing to ground and terrible radio noise.

Don't know why the PTT button would affect the EIS. I've never seen that problem before.

    Bill.

Hi Yanis....has your radio ever worked ok or is it a new installation...have you experimented with the ANL button on the A20...on my A20 it makes a big difference,

If you fully squelch the radio does it go quite then on receive,

What is your transmitted signal like...have you had any reports,

Also you say your A20 is a panel mounted radio...I thought the A20 was a handheld only radio....do Icom make it as a panel mount also????

Hi Nick, I am sorry about the description of my pamel radio, It is an A-200 not an A20,
It was new when first installed and the broblems was always there but just din't bother much as aircraft wa an experimental and not ready to fly yet,
Now when I use a portable it is intepentent as far as power supply but still use the intercome which is powered from the aircraft,
I wish someone can advice me about the possible solutions that I indicate and have in mind but don't know where to start.
    Regards
    Yanis

So when you use the portable set...do you still get the same interferance.
