Guys,
I have a new 912ULS installed in a homebuilt Aerospool Dynamic that I have just finished. The engine starts and runs like an electric motor. I do have a question about the Soft Start module. I think I have heard that the soft start feature was incorporated by the factory on late model 912ULS engines. My engine was built in 2011. Any idea if this late an engine already has this feature?
Thanks very much,
Brad

    Brad,

You have the soft start module. Want to be sure, just listen to the engine when you start it. With soft start, It will run slowly for about eight seconds and then suddenly speed up. The engine starts with the timing at TDC and after a few seconds changes to the standard BTDC setting. The change in sound and RPM is obvious.

    Brad,

Quick way to see if your engine has the new "Advance Start" modules installed in production is to look at the colour of the serial number tag on top of the module. Yellow serial number tag denotes that the modules ARE the newest "Advance Start" type.

Best way to check is to look for the part number which is laser etched into the module housing on the side opposite the wires. New "Advance Start" modules will have a part number of 966727.

If you do have the newest modules installed, the "Advance Start" feature will not be "Active" unless the modules have been connected to the start solenoid. Bill is correct in that IF the "Advance Start" modules are installed and connected, your engine will start up smoothly in an advanced start timing (3 degrees After TDC, as opposed to retarded timing of 4 degrees Before TDC) and run for approximately 4-7 seconds and then increase noticeably in RPM (100-200RPM) as the timing defaults to regular run timing (26 degrees Before TDC).

The instructions for connecting the "Advance Start" feature of the new modules can be found in the Latest version of the Installation Manual (Edition 1 Revision 1), Section 17.3.11 Page 119.

    Hope this helps.

    Brad,
I had the same question and determined (from above yellow tag plus s/n) that although my machine was equipped with the soft start module, it wasn't 'activated' or wired to my starter solenoid. Look for two lavender colored wires, one going into each of the 'plugs' on the harness just outside the module. If there isn't a wire on that pin coming out of the female end of the plug it simply isn't activated. Took me a couple of minutes to wire it with some parts I bought from Lockwood Aviation and it is certainly an enhancement.
