I have been approached by many 912 owners about coolant temperature and how to control the temperature. Heat duct tape (I call it McGiver tape) is the the most popular device when controlling the coolant temp. Louvers of different shapes and set-ups have been discussed but I have not encountered a smart solution yet. With so many 912's out there it must be the perfect solution somewhere. I saw the following in a forum but it seems just to drastic.

I have an oil thermostat for my 912ULS. I have a sea plane ( Aventura II ) and my whole engine is exposed. I have had this on my engine for about 2 years now and I know 2 other guys that have them also. it keeps my oil right at around 190 f. Before my oil never got close over 140. You can buy the thermostat from Lockwood.

I was also having a problem keeping my water temps up, especially in the winter. I was taping over my radiator and this got to be a pain so I talked to some guys in Canada and they use a ball valve on the heater line so as to restrict the flow of the coolant. I call Kerry at Lockwood and asked him if that would be a problem with the water pump. He said It wouldn’t. Now I can basically dial in my water temp to what I want no matter what the temp outside is.

Any thought?

Yikes! why complicate a simple system? You know the ball valve will bite you one day (Please don't say "it will never happen to me")
There is no lower limit for the coolant/CHT for good reason: not important.
Sure the cylinder is more efficient at high temps but again; not important compared to cooking your heads.

I figured that YIKES would be one of the replies for this. I have been using "McGiver tape" for the rad for 10 years so far without any issues. I have a thermostat for the oil which is working great. Up here in Canada it gets cold in the winter. I suppose anything that complicates things in a negative way should be avoided. Is there any kind of mechanical rad temperature control that is recommended, except for M.G.tape?

There are a few of us using thermostat systems on the coolant line before the rad , seems to work well winter and summer. I have tried one made by Highwing llc and am currently using one called a Thermobob. I switched to the thermobob this spring when I did the 5 year hose replacement, I liked the idea of the dedicated bypass line. I haven't used it at -15C yet , so I can't comment if tape is still required. I know one thing, in the next few months I'll find out! :)
