I have a 912ULS, and just wanted to confirm the Rotax Carb Heat is an after market option for the engine. On my engine it appears the left carb is always heated and the butterfly Carb heat control valve allows the right carb to be heated. Any feedback would be welcomed.

    Thanx,

    Bill

    Hi Bill,

If using the 912 Rotax airbox it is already set up for you to connect the carb heat function. Both carbs should always get carb heat when you have them hooked up and not just one carb. You should have carb heat and not really consider it an option. I have not seen a system that only has one carb hooked up.

I have needed the carb in the mountains climbing out of a valley when in carb ice conditions, the 912ULS would run rough after leveling out in cruise and carb heat always fixed the problem.

It appears the left cylinder(s) coolant return lines supplies heat to the left carb, there is a manual valve (controlled from the cockpit) that permits this warm coolant return to flow through thus (heat) the right carb then back to the coolant reservoir.

    Hi Bill,

Sounds like you have the hot coolant style carb heat. That's good because it doesn't affect the air/fuel mixture like introducing hot air into the air intake which makes the carbs run rich.

You should however have it on both and it isn't hard to plumb in. You don't need to turn it on and off and could remove that extra valve. You could leave it on all the time as it was designed for because it doesn't mess with your air mixture going through the carb.
