This has been discussed many times and I've read many of the posts, but I'll have another go.

My 912 (500 hours on it) shows good oil pressure when first started (middle of the green arc). After flying for 15 minutes or so, the oil pressure starts to fluctuate and then drops to the top of the red arc. If I drop the RPM below 4,000 the oil pressure steadies again in the middle of the green arc. Increasing the RPM starts the fluctuation again. This much is repeatable.

The previous owner fitted a dedicated ground from the sensor onto the gearbox housing. Would it be better to ground directly to the battery?

I intend to upgrade the pressure relief spring/piston, etc. at the next annual in a couple of weeks anyway.

I may also replace the sensor at the same time.

If none of the above fixes the problem, where in the engine should I next look?

Just a shot in the dark but it could be a problem with the inner/outer rotors. If the new plug/spring/ball does not work, try taking the pump cover off and see if you have any big scrap marks on the inside surface of the cover. You can dress out any scrapes on a true surface plate and 320 wet n dry emery cloth with oil on it. Make sure you make a figure 8 pattern, not a circle, as the human hand will always make an uneven pressure when going in a circle. don't worry about small scuff marks from the rotor, that is normal.
If you just have normal rotation scuffing then check the clearance between the pump body and the rotors. It needs to be between 0.0mm-0.13mm. Don't re-surface the pump body to bring the clearance to near min, we had a guy who tried this on a few pumps and each pump made pressure inversely proportional to RPM. That was interesting for the pilots! Low RPM gave high pressure, high RPM-low pressure!
    Probably just the plug/spring/ball though...

    Rob,

    Thanks for the quick response.

Thinking about it, I'll only replace one item at a time, then re-fly the aircraft each time to try to pin down the root of the problem.

Does taking the cover off necessitate a purge?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Terence,
Depends on your actions: If you take the cover off and drain (void)the oil galleries you do need to purge the system.
The Line Maintenance Manual states purging of the oil system is necessary:
    1. before each first start up (e.g. after overhaul)
    2. after maintenance work during which the lubrication system was opened and voided. (example: replacing the oil cooler)
    3. when engine was cranked with open oil lines (e.g. during oil change).
    4. when oil system or oil lines were blown through with compressed air.
Items 3 and 4 are maintenance ERRORS, they are not part of the oil change procedure.
