I want to buy a VDO oil pressure gauge and install it in my rotax 912 powered Kitfox. I assume the sender gets remoted to the firewall and the VDO gauge gets wired through the firewall to the sender. But, what powers the gauge? is it resistance type or do you need to put the gauge into a power source to read the sender? If I have to tap into ships power to hook it up I need an electrical guy, I just don't have those skills.

    Hi Jay,

Part of this answer depends on what gauge you have in the cockpit. Some VDO senders have a single wire that goes right to the gauge and gets its ground from the engine contact. The other VDO gauge has 2 wires, one for ground and one for the gauge.

So, … it doesn't go into the fuse bus bar or anything like that? It just goes to the gauge either through the wire from the sender or the wire from the sensor and a ground wire if it has provision for one?

If your VDO sender has a single pole wire then it goes directly to the gauge and the sender gets its ground from the engine and or the ground on the gauge itself. If it is a two pole/wire sender then one still goes to the gauge and the other to ground. This does depend on which VDO sender you have (single or double pole) and what gauge it is connecting to.
