Hi Roger, I just did the oil purge on the RV-12. I followed the instructions in the video and Installation Manual. I got the oil pressure up to 56 psi and turned the prop well past 30-40 turns, but did not get a drop in the bucket. I stopped there. I was thinking the reason is the hose goes from the bottom of the engine, up over the rear to the oil tank. Maybe not enough pressure to make it up and over. Anyway, I guess I can go back and start again, if necessary?

    Hi Bill,

    You're John's friend?

The return hose from the bottom of the engine works best when it dangles down from the engine. If the hose was up at the high mounted oil tank like the RV12 you may not get the oil return drip/flow until you turn 90 years old.
If the hose hangs down it can run out. If it is up in the air it will take a long time to completely fill the hose so it runs out the top.

Just make sure to check the tappets for air and if they are solid (15 lbs of pressure) then do a start. I'm kind of one of those paranoid types with a new engine on the oil purge and purge it twice back to back. I have to do it twice because one long one might kill me. ;) Keep an eye on the oil pressure right at start and make sure it comes right up. Just to be safe, after a 1-3 minutes shut it down and double check the oil level.

There are two ways to do it also. With plugs in or plugs out. I like and use plugs out method. I also turn the prop a lot faster than that young guy in the video. Young guys aren't as sturdy as us old guys. :pinch: I rotate about 80-90 times for 1 min. Then take a break with some oxygen from the medic  and then do it again. I have never had soft lifters and usually get about 55 psi on the gauge during the rotation. I don't care to fight against the compression with the plugs in way.

The Rotax video says 20-60 rotations. I'm sure there are many that have a personal touch they use, but in the end it gets the air out and the technique is probably very close.

Doing an oil purge is a must so might as well do a good job the first time so you don't have to do it twice or in the worst case scenario cause damage.

Thanks Roger. Yes, I'm Johns friend, and he came over after my posting. We finally got the job done, including some dirty oil out of the hose.

Hi Roger, we had better luck w/plugs in, but we have decided to do another purge, today, and will start w/plugs out, again. I think you're right, might just as well do it twice while we have everything in place. Thanks.
