    Hi Tim

I would be looking at your modules. One may have failed and one is just about waking up after 20-30 seconds of cranking.

Once the engine starts, everything works as normal.

How old is the engine/modules? Do you have the soft start modules fitted or are they the older ones?

I would change at least one if you can borrow one, just to prove it.

    Cheers Mark

finally got around to changing the spark plug gap. It made sense as I had them set to 7mm a year ago, about the time my problems began. Just set them to 6mm and it started on the first turn of the key 5 seconds in. It is also the longest it has sat for a long time too as the weather has been dismal. Very pleased it was that easy.
Thank you very much for the advise. This site has been extremely helpful for me.

here we go again. Every time I try something it seems to work but eventually comes back.
I have replaced the battery, rebuilt and setup the carbs, new plugs, set the gap to 6mm. and again intermittent start but worse now.
I put an ice pack on for 30 min and she started, half hour later no start, 15 min of ice and she starts.
Last night I went back to investigate closer and it started immediately. The problem with intermittent is that it is intermittent.
Any other suggestions before I replace the modules? Are both exactly the same, what are the odds of both being gone? should start on one set right?

    Hi Tim,

Time to replace the ignition modules. Sounds like one has gone out and now the second is done. The ice trick was the clue.

Seems to me too many modules have failed in the last 4 years. It would be interesting to have a poll to get a handle on the number.

    Tim,

I know it seems unlikely that both modules would fail at the same time. The modules have a "soft start" feature built into the module that is functional during startup and a few seconds after. If one of the modules does not function properly during startup, it's hard to notice because the other module is functioning correctly and after the startup sequence is complete both modules are operating normally by the time you do your mag checks. Eventually the other module fails during the startup sequence and that's why it seems they both fail at the same time. The ice trick is the way to troubleshoot that part of the modules.

Roger is right, you need new modules. If you haven't checked the prices on those make sure you're sitting down when you do.
