We have had a new Rotax 912uls 100hp engine fitted to our aircraft about 7 months ago and due to to the amount of time it takes to get the engine up to 50 degrees C plus the fact that the inflight oil temperature in latter months struggles to maintain more than 85 degrees we decided to purchase and have fitted an oil thermostat as advertised and approved by the LAA.to the oil radiator to assist with shorter warm ups and better controlled operating oil temperatures whilst in flight.

Due to the fact that our engine is due for its first oil change after 25 hrs under the warranty we contacted our Rotax agent who advised us not to install this item as it could invalidate our warranty, as would we were told, if we added Camguard (also LAA approved) to our oil during this first 25 hours to minimise corrosion during long inactive months.

Can anyone advise us on the validity of these restriction? given that these parts are approved both by Rotax and the LAA and if so, would we be restricted from attaching/adding such items during the whole of the warranty period? If so, I for one would be amazed.

    Hi Daniel,

A thermostat does not void the warranty. If that were the case thousands of engines would be affected. Most of the Flight Design fleet and other aircraft MFG's install them right at the factory.

******Just a side note to new engine owners.

Make sure your engine is registered with Rotax for the warranty. Either have your aircraft MFG help you or call your regional service center to get it done.
Make sure you do the required 25 hr. warranty inspection and put it in the logbook. Might as well use the checklist out of the Line Maint. manual, have the mechanic sign it off for each item checked and put it in a 3 ring binder as part of your new paper trail.
These are important so do not let them slide.

If you have as new engine you might as well start off with good habits and not let things slide out of neglect or laziness.

Many thanks. So waiting until after the initial 25hr inspection is also not necessary therefore? Thanks again.

You need to call your regional Rotax service center. Fill out a CSIR and copy your logbook and send those to that service center. make sure you do a good job filling out the CSIR form and I hope you did a good job in your logbook for documentation.
