I come to you seeking LSA knowledge. I have a Rans S-12 ESLA which I have refurbished through Lockwood Parts. I have just Purchased a 2008 Remos G3/600 which is an SLSA.
Its annual is due next month and has not had the rubber goods replace as I have done on the Rans. My question is do I have to buy my rubber goods from Remos as they used their own (Factory) Blue coolant hose and fuel hose instead of stock Rotax. I guess my question is do you have to use factory replaceable parts on an SLSA. I swear I remember something to the effect that an SLSA is not a certified AC like a Cessna and is treated differently.

Thanks Chuck

    Hi Charles,

Here is the FAA stance. If a part has a part number then it's supposed to come from the aircraft dealer. The FAA says that the MFG may have done some specific testing or even a modification to the part that the owner doesn't know about.

    Here is the but side,

Most LSA MFG's don't enforce and some don't even care if parts such as a hose gets replaced from someone other than themselves. The reason I say this is I do a lot of hose changes and none of the MFG's try to make me buy their hose provided I use a comparable product.
Some LSA MFG's even call me an ask where I get my parts so they can buy them too.

Researching your materials so they are the same or close is important and far too many never do that. They just grab whatever is on a shelf and fits. That's always a bad idea.

    The big but here is:
You have to have the knowledge of the original product and the replacement one to know if they are comparable. That said the reason you may need to buy certain products from an MFG is that part may actually be different from what you think compared to the same thing from another source.

This is something that you may want to call the dealer and just ask.
    It never hurts to ask.

The legal answer is if it has a part number from an SLSA MFG then technically you're supposed to buy it from them.

    ELSA do whatever you want.
