Hi Roger
Just a quick question If I take out the Metal filter out of the oil tank to clean it , do I need to purge the system ?

The Issue I have is on a flight yesterday I noticed the oil gauge fluctuating between Zero and normal operating pressure , on landing I checked the engine over no visible problems seen.
Not sure if you remember but a couple of months ago I had the problem to higher a pressure which turned out in the end to be a faulty connection, I Did at the time replace the pressure release vale with the new mushroom type since I done that it has been reading a little lower than before but well with limits. So I am thinking I may try the ball and spring again just to see if that stops it fluctuating , then I thought may be the filer might need cleaning as it has not be done before The engine is a 912uls with 366hrs since 2008.

Your Thoughts please .

John.

    Hi John,

It isn't the mushroom and I personally wouldn't put the ball bearing back in. This is either the sender or a connection. make sure all connections are tight by pushing and pulling them back in place. Some may need to be squeezed depending on what you have. Poor ground connections cause this quite regular so make sure they all get a wrench put on them. Last, but not least it can be the sender. I really doubt it is a true oil pressure problem. Do the easy cheap things first. If you unscrew the fittings on top of the tank and do not allow the oil to drain out of them then no purge. The reasoning behind that is when you do a normal oil change and drain the tank all the oil comes out including the fittings. So they wouldn't have oil in them anyway. Pull the fittings off the top, keep them upright so no oil drains. Open and clean the tank, replace the tank, fill with 3 liters of oil and then rotate the prop a number of times just to make sure everything is charged with oil.

Roger I have taken a look today at the connectors taken them off and pushed them back and checked they were tight, test run engine for 20mins up to 4000 RPM all seems ok now , so soon as the weather gets better I will take her for a test fly and see what happens will let you know.

    Thanks again Roger

My "Honeywell" sensor started intermittently dropping to zero at 360 hrs.
Replaced with the new "Keller" type and all is well......
