Proper battery for 912 ULS

That's kind of up to you to pick a battery. An 18 amp/hr and you're good. Some use smaller batteries, but the battery is right next to the starter and they get away with a smaller battery. I have seen 7 &12 batteries used, but that doesn't leave much reserve and the battery needs to be close to the starter and the wire short too. As a rule of thumb the farther away from the starter the bigger the gage wire.

I've been using an Odyssey PC680 for over 10 years. It is an AGM battery and, after I started religiously attaching my Battery Minder Plus smart charger, the second one lasted 7 years.

There are a lot of planes that use Odyssey batteries. Average life seems to be 3-5 years. Like anything else it depends on how you take care of it.
All the Flight Design aircraft use Odyssey. The guys in Europe use the Hawker SBS batteries which is the European make of the Odyssey.

I use a SuperB 7800 LiFePo4 battery. It is about 1/3 the weight of a descent battery, and turns the engine over so fast its amazing. I recon I could take off on battery power alone :-)

The battery is more than just an engine starter.
360 amps for 10 seconds is 1 amp•Hour of power.
As long as the battery can muster the high current, a very small battery will start the plane.

Size the battery not just to start the plane but also to get you back on the ground with the engine still running after a generator failure.
A 7aH battery may be able to crank the engine for over for a minute but it might not power the plane for even 30 minutes in the event of a generator failure.
