Hi, My Rans S-7 has a 912 that has run perfectly for 1000hrs. The gear box was serviced at 600hrs. I felt a buzz in the rudder pedals between 4 to 5 thousand RPM and found metal on the magnet. Pulled the gear box and sent it out for service. Checked the magnet 3 hrs after re installing the gear box, and found the same amount of metal. The vibration was gone, but engine pulses felt harder. (new springs I guess). Now after another 4 hours buzz in rudder pedal has returned. Wood prop was balanced at prop shop, carbs rebuilt and balanced, auto gas and oil changes at 50 hrs, new plugs. Any ideas??
Thanks in advance, Gene

It would be nice to know how much metal you are seeing? A few tiny specs vs chunks or large slivers. Rotax has pictures of what is acceptable.

Today I discovered a slight shift in the muffler, putting it in contact with a cowl mounted head deflector. I am hoping that repairing the worn muffler mount that allowed the muffler to shift will turn out to be the cause of the buzz in my rudder pedals. (Feel stupid for not seeing it sooner). Could I be so lucky that the buzz caused me to inspect the crank case magnet allowing me to discover metal only a short time after changing the oil and finding the magnet clean? The magnet had small particles of metal clinging to the sides. No hair around the top. Sorry for not posting a picture, tried but not good at this. I will post the results of my findings after the muffler support is repaired and I put a few hours on the engine and again check the magnet.

    Thank you Roger ! Gene
