I am planning a flying trip around Australia with a two other aircraft and in some of the more remote parts of our country the choice of fuel can be somewhat limited.
My question is that if I have to make a choice between 91 octane Unleaded Mogas or standard Avgas, what would be the preferred fuel. It may only be used to top up the tank to get to the next destination. I would never use either of these fuels exclusively.
We are all flying with 914 engines and always use Premium grade 98 or 95 unleaded Mogas and only use Avgas if we have to.

Either types of fuel will be fine however in remote areas I would stick with Avgas (ONLY if you are running synthetic oil areo-shel sport plus 4) because you never know the quality of the fuel you are getting in remote places.
At least with Avgas, you know its monitored and "supposed to be good". Remember you can run up to 30% Avgas before it affects your maintenance intervals.

You could also run a 50/50 mix of avgas and mogas. This will lower the lead count but bring up your octane and this seems to be a real good combination and the engine is happy to run both at same time.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I have a quick (I think) question. The only non-ethanol gas any where around me is 89 octane (U.S. calculation). My plan is to use 91 octane 10% ethanol and mix 50/50 with 100LL. Should I use decalin in that case as I do when I use 100LL exclusively while travelling? Does anyone see any issues with mixing 100LL with a 91 octane 10% ethanol fuel? Thanks in advance for your help.

There will be no issues with the 100LL and 91 with ethanol. If your fuel tanks are okay with the ethanol like many you can run just the 91 with Ethanol. It won't hurt the engine. If you aren't sure call the aircraft MFG. If you use the 100LL then yes I would use the Decalin. The majority in the US use 91 with ethanol. Most of the fuel stations that say up to 10% only have 6-7% when tested.

Thanks Roger. I’m flying the Tecnam P2008 so I’ll contact them to see if they have any concerns about the ethanol. Using strictly 91 octane with 10% ethanol would certainly make life easier.
