Hello guys, please i have a problen with my rotax engine. I carried out 200 hours inspection and notice dark carbon deposit on the spark plugs and carburetors. I cleaned the carburetor and replaced spark plugs. However my engine will not start, i checked my idle screw adjustment and it was 1.5 turns still my engine can not start. I noticed that the plugs on cylinders 2 & 4 still have the black carbon deposit. Please how do i solve this problem?

    Hi Emeka,

Make sure the battery is good. Even if you think it is good try jump starting the engine with a know good source.
I might be jumping the gun here a little, but try this because it's cheap and easy to do. Put some ice in a one gallon ziplock bag. Drape this over the two black ignition modules on top of the engine. let this sit for about 30 minutes. Then try and start the engine. If it starts right up you'll need new modules. If this doesn't work we'll move on to other things.

Also in addition, cylinder 1 & 3 spark plugs are not firing could this be a possible cause for the engine not starting. How do i solve the problem?

    Hi Roger,
I have tried jumping the battery and dropping ice on the ignition module but the engine still did nit start. The first attempt to start almost picked which the rpm increased and dropped gradually to zero. The second attempt the propeller moved slugishly but no feed back on d rpm. I observed the spark plugs on cylinder 1 &3 are not firing.

I know you said you're doing the 200 hour inspection. Is this the total time on the engine and how old is the engine? Does this engine have the older black starter or the higher torque starter that is kind of silverish gold in color?

If the engine turns sluggishly that isn't the modules. Your description of sluggishly has me concerned. Can you rotate the prop by hand as easy as before? We don't have quite enough info so some of this is guessing. This could be the starter, the sprag, the battery or even a loose connection so the starter isn't getting full power. You may need to do an amp check to see how many amps the starter is pulling at start. Has any maintenance been done lately?

    Hi Roger
My engine is the 914 F2, it is 580 hours old, the starter is the black type. The propeller rotation with hand is ok. By sluggish i mean reluctant to start, it has not started. The first attempt to start almost started the engine but the second attempt was not as powerful as the first and thus subsequent attempts.
