How bad is it to run on just 3 cylinders?

How bad is it for the running engine if one cylinder is disabled by disabling one pair of spark plugs? I know power goes down by a lot and the engine runs rough but can it damage the engine? I had a thought that it could be informative to feel what the vibration and sound is like with only 3 cylinders on the ground so I would know what to expect if it happened in the air but of course I would not do it if it harms the engine.
