I would say you do not have to replace them every 5 years especially in the wings which saves a lot of time and effort, check out the link on the first page where a builder is installing them in the wing area.

One of the things I like about owning/flying an uncertified/experimental aircraft is that most, if not all, of the parts are uncertified.
For me the benefits are:
Much lower acquisition & running costs
I actually enjoy (weird I know) researching the most cost effective service items that meet/exceed the Rotax/airframe manufacture specifications much of which can be found in the automotive world.
Knowing that I am flying a safe and efficient aircraft, because I have done all the work to make it so.
