I am confused by two different maintenance schedules I have found:

If I search for "rotax 582 mainenance schedule" on Google, this is the first listing, an "alternative" maintenance schedule for Rotax 2-strokes...

http://www.aviation-engines.co.za/downloads/Maintenance%20Schedule.pdf

*600 Hour TBO for first overhaul, then 300 hours after that
*50 hour spark plug changes
*100 hour fuel filter changes
*no 50-hour inspections of piston rings and cylinder heads
*etc.

It certainly appears to be an official Rotax document, but if I actually visit any Rotax sites and search for documents and files, I can only find this one...

http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com/portaldata/5/dokus/d00288.pdf

*300 Hour TBO
*25 hour spark plug changes
*50 hour fuel filter changes
*50 hour inspections of piston rings and cylinder heads
*etc.

Certainly, the "alternative" schedule is far more enticing. Which one should I use to be safe and legal as an ELSA in the USA?

    Hi Erin,

    Use the second one.

Thanks, but can you share any info as to the existence of the first one and why it wouldn't be acceptable here if it is acceptable in other places? That first one also appears to have Rotax complicity in its creation, and it was created more recently than the second one. What's the deal? As an ELSA, I have more leeway with this than an SLSA and would just like to fully understand the differences between these two different schedules that Rotax has written.

I think the 1st one is for South Africa pilots....who knows why they are different.

    Hi Erin,

Right out of the current Maint. manual. You can download all the current 2 stroke manuals and SB's from this website.

Thanks, Roger. I know that is the one that is listed in the current manual. The link that I provided in my original post was to the maintenance manual.

My question really pertains more to the "alternative" schedule. The schedule in the service manual has not been updated since 1999, but the "alternative" schedule was apparently written with Rotax approval in 2008, after many more years of engine experience. Assuming that fuel, air, and gravity are the same in South Africa as the rest of the world, I am curious what conditions need to be met for Rotax to support the alternative schedule. The alternative schedule actually makes Rotax engines look better, although I can also understand that it would not be as attractive to their mechanics, nor would it allow Rotax to sell as many parts. Yet, they DID apparently write that schedule.
