Mike you where saying you have done a lot of work to this engine over the last month or so....has this overheating only started since you carried out the work or was it there before,

Are your EGTs the same now as before the work also....has the timing been adjusted recently...over advancing it can cause overheating...spark plugs....have they been changed,

Do you have a CHT gauge on this engine....I wonder do you have access to one of those hand held laser temp gauges to verify that the a/c temp gauge is really telling you the truth...there quite cheap these days on ebay.

    Nick.

Pud, I been thinking the same thing. Will be hard though as the tops of both rads sit 10mm from the cowl and the bottom corners almost touch the cowl. The guy that did my endscope look at the pistons is a rad specialist. I will wait and see what he has to say next time I see him. Meanwhile I can put up with it...; just dont fly on warm days. Oh, and I also have the baffle option to check out.

Hahaha I was even considering waxing the whole darn plane lol. Its pretty cleans tho most of the time. ;)

I finally got all the nuts undone on the Y piece after soaking them in WD40 but struck a problem getting it all the way off because the exhaust holding bracket is preventing it. I suppose I will have to undo all the other side to allow the whole lot to drop to the floor. This will require yet another emptying of the Rad because the bracket is bolted through the thermostat connection point. Hope to have it all out today and will post some pics of what I find.

Bill its interesting what you say about the EGT's and fuel pump because I have been messin with that pump a fair bit lately. overhauled it a while back and again pulled it apart and re-assembled it a week ago to make sure the gaskets/diaphragms were not infringing. Somehow I think it might be some of the problem because someone from this forum said a while back that that might be the cause of my "loss of 700 rpm" topic recently. The only spannar in the works is that my EGT's are perfect... cruise about 1100 @ 5600rpm and climb at WOT is as low as 1000rpm. Not high at all. I have checked the throttle cable many times for faults and changed all fuel filters and refurbished both carbs... so just maybe that fuel pump is the proble even with new seals and diaphragms. I will make this my next project after i check the rings/pistons.

Dunno if my tank has a strainer or not. Never ever noticed one but I suppose it cant be seen inside the tank anyway. And no, I havent yet noticed any drop in cruise rpms either. Everything seems normal until I am 1" away from full throttle, and then nothing alters for the rest of the way. Its as if full throttle stops 1" from where it should be.

    Will get back soon.... Mike.

PS: I am not at all phased about all this trouble because it is great engine education for me. I am learning much faster than if all was perfect.

Nick... it is the overheating and rpm drop that has "caused" all the work I have done recently, so the problems happened before the work and still persist. First the rpm drop...and then the high temps (or even both together).

EGT's appear the same...if not a tad better maybe now. Always been within proper range.

Changed plugs more than enough. Tried both the recommended br8es and the br8etx. They always seem to have fuel on them even though I first cool the engine by 3 minutes+ idle and then run up to 3000rpm and shut first one mag and then the other.

Do not have a CHT gauge. My water temp gauge has been calibrated with 2 other thermometers and they all within 5 deg of each other.

Finally got that stubborn Y exhaust piece off and made a short video of the piston. I can't see anything wrong, but maybe someone else here might.... Please let me know your thoughts.

Here is the video at utube...
