Unless the engine is up to temp it wont flow....the thermostat has to open first...I'm presuming the engine was not hot.

Looking into the rad sometimes gives you an idea if the vanes are in good order....if the vanes you can see look crudy there is a good chance things are not flowing as they should,

I would think if you took the rads to a rad shop they would test them for you,

A mate of mine had an old Landrover that was overheating....to test the rad we got a very thin gas welding rod about 1mm thick and gently pushed it down each of the vanes we could see through the opening with the cap off....we couldn't get the rod in very far due to crap inside the vanes...a new rad cured his problem,

If you do try this dont put any pressure on the wire as you can poke a hole through the copper or is it brass vane very easy.

Will whip it out today and have it checked. Will also borrow a pressure gauge from my local garage to test compression as well, and post results.

    Thanks... mike

    Hey Bill,

I got to do a compression test today. The tester I had never had a thread to screw in... only a tapered rubber piece on the end that you push hard against the engine plug hole. I got 83 psi on the cylinder closet to the firewall and 87 psi on the cylinder closest to the prop. Although not perfect figures, I suspect that is acceptable?

    Mike,

Those are normal numbers for an older engine and both cylinder are pretty close together. Doesn't sound like anything seriously wrong there except normal wear.

I'm clutching at straws here, but the next time you warm up the engine, stop it and feel the face of both rads to see if one is noticeably cooler than the other. The way they are plumbed, you could have one partially blocked and still have good flow.

I'm still leaning toward Nick's idea about having the rads cleaned.

    Bill.

    Mike,

That must have been a hair raising event to make that video!

    Bill.
