I just read an extensive article where Pennzoil tested 4 503's with 4 different oils, 2 of which were Pennzoil air cooled and Pennzoil multipurpose. The results show that the multipurpose is OK for use in the Rotax 2- stroke. I am having trouble getting the air cooled Pennzoil and I am thinking of switching. Will sooner or later have to switch to something else. Any thoughts on what I can do?-------rick

    Rick,

Any major brand which offers an API-TC or API-TC3 oil will work fine. When Pennzoil quit offering the air cooled oil, I used the multipurpose for years with no ill effects. You can go to any Japanese motorcycle dealer and they will have several brands that work well in aircooled two cycle engines.

I would stay away from synthetic oils as they do not offer the corrosion protection that mineral oils do when the engine stands for long periods.

Bill, the MC shops charge a small fortune for their oils and Pennzoil can be bought anywhere. I guess you are saying it works fine? thanks-------rick

    It worked for me.

Maybe someone else will jump in on this one. Talking two stroke oil falls in that neverland between religion and politics and you may get all sorts of recommendations. If I remember correctly, it says on the multipurpose bottle that it can be used for aircooled engines.

My opinion is that if you use any reputable mineral oil with an API-TC or API-TC3 rating, you'll be OK.

Bill, it says TC-W3 on the bottle but not TC-3. Is this the same?
Guess it doesn't matter, Pennzoil did the major tests on Rotax 503's and all was well. They picked Rotax to do the tests for a reason :) Just wanted reassurance from other Rotax owners who have switched I guess -------rick
