There are many K&N filters that don't have metal on them anymore. I don't see as many metal end ones anymore.

Plus the #1 thing I always do is safety wire any filter on the carb end. There is a small hole under the edge of the carb right next to where the filter will mount. Some K&N's have protruding lips with a hole already to go. For the ones that don't I just push the end of the safety wire through the rubber filter edge of the filter between one of the pleats. When the filter is installed push on it very firmly and it should not come off.

If the K&N is in its own airbox then no worries.I see this alot now days, but some aircraft Mfg's still just stick them on the end of the carb in a cowled plane. Way to much hot air. Better to have the cool air from outside the cowl for the engine and not the hot air inside the cowl.

For those who don't have a pusher prop setup and just have a front cowled engine then you still want it safety wired. You still don't want it to fall off and get wedged down on a hot exhaust pipe and catch fire.

Anything can be bad if misused. Even the use of a screwdriver.

Thanks Roger.  Do you have a K&N part number that folks are using?

    Hi Mike,

There are different ones for different planes. Just look at your current air filter and get a part number for it and then do a search online for the K&N cross reference.

Thanks Roger.  I am building my plane, so no filter yet. The kit manufacturer (RANS) says the filter is "builder supplied".  I ended up buying a Rotax one from Lockwood.  Their description says it is for Rotax 912ULS with Rotax airbox.  Lockwood part # EARU1710.  Only $54, so not bad.

Here's an update.  I called Lockwood Aviation (authorized Rotax dealer) and asked them what air filter that I should use for my Rotax 912ULS with Rotax airbox.  They said Lockwood part # EARU1710.  They said this is a K&N filter and their part number is RU-1710.  I ordered two from Lockwood.
