The partner on my airplane was flying home from a short cross country when he noticed the oil pressure drop below 25PSI. He immediately cut power to idle and made best glide for the nearest airport. He did a great job and made the airport within 14 mins. He never powered back up and cut the engine immediately once he made the turn off the runway. At that point oil pressure was steady at 18psi. He reports that was the lowest the oil pressure went and it was steady in the descent at around 20. All temps remained in the green and totally normal.
Once on the ground it was clear there was a large oil leak because the belly was coated in oil and oil was pooled in the lower cowling. By the time I got to the airport about 70 minutes later there were droplets kind of raining onto the asphalt from the belly of the plane. We cleaned things up underneath but weren't able to take the cowlings off to inspect.
The 914 currently has about 150hrs on a 2020 airframe. About one hundred hours of that total has occurred under our ownership in the last five months.
I'm going to try and get to the airport today and get the cowlings off. What should I expect here? Anything specific I should be looking for? While the airport he landed at is a fairly large muni, it mainly tailors to Cessna flight training and corporate jets. I don't believe there are any Rotax certified mechanics on field.
