Usually if the reg/rec goes it just stays bad. His problem is intermittent so it is more likely a wire connection. Reg/rec can go bad, but it isn't that often. I would bet it is a smaller number than you think.

Have only replaced one regulator ever. It was a Key West brand which was suddenly producing 19V consistently.
This regulator is almost identical to the Ducati. I actually prefer it to the Ducati because it is simpler to wire and will operate with or without a battery to dump the load into. Which also means you don't need an expensive capacitor in the circuit. Just out of curiosity, I sawed it open with a bandsaw and the actual regulator is about the size of a large postage stamp. it is potted in solid epoxy inside the case, which is nothing but a block of aluminum that acts as a heat sink. Ducati and Key West regulators are both reliable and long lasting. When it comes to repairing one though, forget it. If you know its the regulator, dump it and get another one.

Roger; How do you operate the blue thumbs up thank you thingy? I can't figure it out.

    Hi Bill,

I'm with you in that the reg/rec are very dependable. They have had some go bad, but more rare than common. I have heard of someone that said they knew someone that knew someone that had a bad one, but the actual data doesn't support it.

    Roger,

My charging problem has now become constant. I don't understand how to test the alternator in operation. As mentioned earlier the ohm rating was correct in the test between the yellow wires with the engine off. The instructions at 74-00-00 page 16 figure 74-12 don't make sense to me. It shows to check the alternator through the regulator. It seems that I should test the alternator directly through the "yellow" wires without the regulator connected. Any suggestions?

I found this article interesting http://contrails.free.fr/elec_ducati_en.php

I'm about ready to just buy the regulator. At this point it would be worth the cost at $175 just to rule it out.

Well, I ordered a regulator. The two Rotax suppliers I know of were out of stock. It's coming from Canada and should be here in Porterville, CA Friday.

I talked with a Rotax mechanic this morning and he said to simply put a volt meter between the two yellow wires from the alternator to test if it is functioning properly. Should get a reading of 20 to 80 volts depending on RPM.

Still, seems like there should be a way to test the Ducati regulator. I suppose that if the alternator is putting out power then by default the regulator is bad?
