Hi all,
Just wondering how much oil usage is normal between 50 hourly changes ? Mine is using .8 of a litre at the 50 hour mark with compression checks at 80/80 on all four cylinders.

    Hi Justin,

Unless your plugs are oily, have oily residue in the exhaust pipe, have a leak you haven't seen and you have good compression test I can't imagine you using .8 liters in 50 hrs. That's almost a full liter and that would be a lot of oil going some place. What makes you think that? Gurgling the engine with the prop can lie to you. Some engines can retain a little more residual oil over others after a prop gurgle and have you taken into consideration all oil in the filter? If you are really using that much oil could you have a small leak that the wind currents through and over the engine is blowing off?

    Roger,
I have added .8 of a litre in 50 hours to keep the level within range on the indent on dipstick. The plugs are clean and not oily, the underside of the aircraft shows no signs of oil the exhaust pipe is dry, and the engine is fully covered by cowlings. The only sign of oil leaks after engine has been run are a slight drip (1 drop of oil) on the bottom cowling beneath the front two cylinder heads and above the gearbox output shaft at the rear of gearbox. The breather hose from oil tank is also oily.

Any oil on the belly of the plane?

    Roger,
After further investigation today and reading the maintenance manual I have been trying to maintain the oil level to the top mark but as the manual states it should be maintained at the halfway mark. Possibly it has been blowing excess oil out the breather line although there is no evidence on the belly of the aircraft ?. Also the last oil change was the 5 year hose replacement and I am thinking I ended up with less than 3 litres in the oil tank even though I was adding oil as I went through the process of purging the oil lines and system of air. I will keep an eye on things and see how they progress with maintaining oil level at the halfway mark.
