Oil pressure with oil thermostat fitted
I just have a question about the oil PRESSURE with the Thermostasis fitted. After engine start the oil pressure comes up to about 60psi as it did previously which seems fine. As the temp increases the oil pressure reduces which again I think is to be expected. However I have noticed with the thermostasis fitted that as it warms up and the bypass closes, the oil pressure drops off much more rapidly and by a much larger amount than I remember previously. When the oil is up to temp and the bypass is closed the oil pressure even at full power is about 30psi. Always within limits but seems lower than I remembered from to the Thermostasis.
I may be worrying about nothing and it maybe to be expected with the temp being much better than ever before but I just wondered if anyone would know if with the Thermostasis bypass closed when the temp is up if a significantly lower oil pressure is to be expected just because it is there in the system? I have noticed a couple of times in the cruise with a low outside air temp that I judge the Thermostasis bypass to have opened (doing it's job) because the oil pressure has risen again up to 40+ psi. But in a normal UK summer I think the bypass stays closed even in the cruise because the oil pressure usually stays low in the cruise at about 29-30 PSI. I've not been unduly worried because the oil pressure has always stayed within limits (albeit just) but was just a bit concerned that the Thermostasis might be creating a restriction for some reason that wasn't there previously. I have fitted it with two straight hose tails and two 45 degree hose tails (45 deg ones are allowed according to the Thermostasis notes). I have no reason to suspect the oil pressure indication system as it seems to indicate steady and fine at all other stages of running. It's just a bit low when the Thermostasis bypass is closed.
Cheers!
