Hours aren't the only factor to consider for an overhaul.
With age comes dry rot of "O" rings (leaks both internal and external), gaskets, hoses and varnish type substances from oil and fuels just sitting. Acid build from oil that has been left sitting for years. Possible scoring of parts during starts with long periods of down time.

All these types of things should be considered when making your decision.

I would be more inclined to go on condition if the 15 year old engine had 1500 hours on it verses 200, but they both need some forethought for a decision.

    Hi Roger,

    Thank you for the information.

I use this engine from 50 total hours when it was 9 years old. I fly for the last 6 years about 30-40h/year and have had no issues. I change the oil/filter once/year and do carburetor pneumatic balance.

Fluids are not just sitting for years at least not for the last 6 years.

I tend to just replace rubber hoses and carburetor rubber items as long as there are no signs of issues. Not sure I should replace the rubber rings around the engine as long as they were not exposed at air. That would increase the cost...
If anyone sees any safety issue here and can explain why I would probably reconsider my decision.

Another question regarding TBO extension: If my engine TBO is at 1200 hours/10years and I do SB-912-041UL this will extend the TBO from 1200 h to 1500 h. Is it possible to do SB-912-057UL and extend even further from 1500 h to 2000h or I am stuck at maximum 1500h no matter what I do?

    Thank you!
    Sebastian

    Sebastian,
You can easily preform the 1500hr TBO extension but the 2000hr TBO extension requires a new crankcase.
