    Hi Claude,

The Rotech people are good. If there is a smoking gun they'll find it. It is anybodies guess at this time what went wrong. A catastrophic failure like this is extremely rare.
I would love to know the outcome.

The crack indicate that some part in the gearbox has come loose, and jammed between the gearboxhouse, and the drivegear on the crankshaft. My guess would be that one of the lockscrews from the mainbearing in the gearbox has loosened. Can be verifyed by checking true the hole for the fuelpump..
Hope the crankchaft didnt bend also.... :S

I thought the group would like to know the conclusion of this incident.

The problem was due to a broken belville washer in the gear case. One part of it got between the gears and split the case.
There was extensive damage to the engine not only due to the gears/gear case/crank case damage but also because metal shavings circulated throughout the engine damaging all bearings and lifters.

To their credit Rotax covered all the damaged parts.

This is nothing short of outstanding support for their products. This engine is 13 years old with low hours on it, so it has been out of warranty for about 12 years.

    Hi, Claude.

    It's great finding the reason!
I don't know what exactly the belville washer is. Is it the shim, No. 10 as in below pic, which is used for adjusting disk spring?
