I installed the Bullyhawk softstart module in my 2005 912uls (in a Rans S7S) several years ago and it has worked fine until now. The normal procedure with it is to start on A circuit only, then after the engine is running, add the B circuit. However the last several times i flew, it was reluctant to start on A circuit only but started readily when i turned both circuits on. Once the engine is running both circuits seem to work fine--rpm drop on each circuit is normal and within limits and the engine is developing full power. One note: the recent days have been very hot, but it was the first start of the day. I have checked the ignition wiring and all seems ok, or at least secure. Could the softitart module be starting to fail? Could some different problem be at play?

I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi Key,

It is possible that the "A" module is going bad and maybe the BullyHawk soft start. I'm not sure what the symptoms are if a BullyHawk starts to go bad. Maybe Rob or Conrad has some info on that.
The modules can be removed and sent to someone like Lockwood or Leading Edge that can test them to make sure. Make sure everything else like plugs are gapped correctly, possibly change plugs, carbs synced, ect... are all in good order before you put too much blame on the module. It may be the module, but make sure there are no other items contributing to the problem. Make sure all plug caps on the "A" ignition side are all pushed on tight and no issues with the plug wires where they insert into the plug boot. Do the easy troubleshooting items first that may affect the "A" starting before being more intrusive on the module and sending them off to get them tested.

You can remove the softstart and see if the starting improves, probably best if you install it in the B circuit to prove if it is faulty. The SMD modules seem to go week overtime and dont produce a spark at cranking speed so thats where I would start looking. The Soft start can be tested and if you email us service@conairsports.co.uk I can send you the test procedure. Unfortunately they are now out of production as the demand dropped off once Rotax copied the idea and we only have one 4 pin version left in stock.
