Gents,

I am in need of advice.

My engine is an 800 hour 912UL. A year ago I had a very rough running engine and a small oil consumption problem. I had the engine stripped and rebuilt: an inlet valve was replaced, a new set of bearings were fitted along with a new set of oil control rings.

Since the rebuild the oil consumption has increased significantly. For example, a 2.5 hour flight last week consumed just over 300ml. I have no visible leaks and I have fitted a plastic bottle to the end of the oil tank breather pipe and there is nothing there.

I therefore conclude that the oil is most likely being burnt. Is there a quick method of determining which cylinder is causing the problem? Once I have, can I just pull that cylinder and take a look at the rings? Is the cause likely to be obvious when I look at the piston and inside the cylinder or could it be far more subtle?

From what I can tell the 912 is not renowned for oil consumption problems and for many years I didn't need to add oil between changes so I guess that something is going on inside mine.

Thanks,

Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

You are right and you shouldn't be using oil. Check the exhaust pipe for oily residue. Pull the plugs and look for oily plugs. If all look good except one cylinder then that's the one you need to go after.

    Please keep us informed.

The exhaust just looks black and sooty, no oil residue and the plugs look normal. Unfortunately this is why it is proving difficult to tell what is going on.

I get the feeling that a leak down test is not going to be any more informative. If I pull the cylinders how easy is it to get the rings compressed to slide the cylinder back on?

Do the leak down test and see. If you have absolutely no signs in any diagnostic checks then you may have not really used that oil.
If you are using oil in that quantity then there should be some sign some where.
Are you sure you really used 300ml or is it still in the bottom of the crankcase? Many times just doing a gurgle check with the prop can lie.

The oil has definitely gone as I have put several litres in over the past couple of months. At first I thought that I was imagining the problem and as you say I thought that not all of the oil was returning from the crankcase during gurgling.

What is interesting is that it much easier to gurgle the engine since the rebuild. Before it could take up to 15 prop rotations to gurgle whereas now it only takes about 2-3.

I might have time to go and take a further look this weekend. The forecast is poor over here in the UK so there will be no flying.

I am not sure how well it will work on a ROTAX, but when doing compression checks on LYCs and CONTs, we listen to the intake/carb inlets for intake valve leakage, to the exhaust outlet for exhaust valve leakage, and to the oil tank filler for ring leakage. Listening for leakage may aid you in your assessment of the engine's condition. On my 225-hour 912ULS, my recent compression check showed all cylinders as being 85#-86#/87# with the only sound of leakage coming from the oil tank/crankcase (slight ring blow-by as expected).
