    Hi Kevin

I think the scraper rings have been put in upside down. The only way to check is to take a head off and a cylinder and look.

Thanks for your thoughts David. I did a compression check after the rebuild and I found as you did that there is slight leakage past the rings which can be heard in the oil tank.

I fear that there is no shortcut to the inevitable task of removing the cylinders and taking a look. I am guessing that a broken ring will be fairly obvious. If all rings look good then I will be looking at the cylinder bores and the pistons themselves.

I agree with Mark. Take a look at the rings as they may have aligned with their openings and may be installed wrong.
Do your checks first and try to limit the intrusion into all the cylinders.

Good idea to check the rings.
All the Rotax piston rings have some sort of marking to indicate the "top" surface. Look close near the gap to see this marking.
Depending on the vintage the 1st ring will have "0" or a dot on it, the 2nd ring will have a "TOP" and the oil scraper ring will have "ELCO" (the oil scraper ring is symmetrical so it really doesn't matter but it is still good practice to have all the markings up)
The 912S 2nd ring are different (100hp has a step profile, the 80hp has a slight taper profile)

    Hi Rob

It was the 2nd ring I was thinking of. I had an engine that was burning quite a lot of oil, and the middle rings were fitted upside down. After fitting them the right way the oil consumption settled down after a few hours.
