Hi,

My 912 ULS busted a cooling hose on the ground and the temperature went up to about 280 degrees momentarily before I shut it off.

Will that cause any damage, what shall I check to make sure there is no damage to the engine.

Thanks in advance,

John

    Hi John,

You should be okay. It wasn't long enough to cause any issues. Was it just older hose, bad clamp or too close to an exhaust pipe?

    General Side note********

Make sure that all fuel, oil and coolant hose have some type of heat shielding if in close proximity of an exhaust pipe.
I have seen many oil and coolant hoses burnt through. It can be very costly to your life and someone else's and the very least to your wallet. Do not think you know what the hose looks like under the fire sleeve. I have seen fire sleeve not quite visible that was burnt through and burned through the interior hose too. Cracks form and hose separates at an increased rate where it is clamped compared to the middle of the hose.

Rotax has a 5 year rubber replacement program. Gates hose MFG found that after 4 years hose failures steeply increase and as each year goes by continues to grow. Will some hose last a lot longer, no doubt, but this isn't a craps game so you should be gambling. There are too many failures caused by lack of easy maint. The rubber replacement includes all fuel, oil and coolant hoses, carb diaphragms, rubber carb intake sockets, rubber engine mounts, the 66mm hose that joins the carb crossover tube to the carbs. All fuel and oil hose should be in fire sleeve. The fire sleeve is re-usable.

Owning an aircraft and carrying passengers carries with it increased responsibility whether you want to pay for it or not.
Remember we can't pull over to the curb and call AAA.

    Thanks Roger,

    It was a bad clamp.

Just curious, was it a spring type clamp?, or a screw type ?.
It hadn't occurred to me until recently that the spring type is allowed to expand with changes in temp, the screw type will not, and it can crush the hose wall.

It is a screw type clamp.
