Is there a Rotax Service Instruction for the removal, inspection and cleaning of the oil tank without purging the oil system during an oil change? I've used mostly 100LL for the first 75 hrs and making the effort now to use Non Ethanol Unleaded Mogas.

Thank you,

Bill

    Hi Bill,

So long as your fuel tanks are okay with the ethanol then the engine is good and you don't have to go out of your way to seek non ethanol fuel.

As far as pulling the tank that is easy and no purge necessary. Here's why. When you do a normal oil drain/change the oil coming out the tank also drains up to and including the fittings on top of the tank. So when you remove the two fittings they should be empty except for a drop or two. Make sure these are placed in an upright position so no oil drains from these. Sometimes I place a rubber stopper in them depending on the plane. (Don't forget to remove the stopper) Drain the oil from the output hose and your on your way to a purge. So long as no oil is lost then pull the tank and clean it. Then just put the hoses back on without loosing any oil. Fill the tank with oil and rotate the prop about 20 times just to fill the new oil filter and make sure you have oil in the lines.

If you do not loose any oil here then it is no different than a regular oil change.

Can you just take the bottom section off the tank and just leave to top and fittings attached?

Yes and here's why. When you do a normal oil change out the bottom of the tank all oil evacuates including the fittings at the top. Remember when there is no oil don't rotate the prop. When you remove the fittings on top of the tank they are empty. I put a rubber stopper in them so if they do hang down no oil will escape. Clean the tank and replace the fittings. Fill the tank with your 3 liters of Aero Shell Sport plus 4. For those of you that use US quarts remember that 3 liters is 8 oz. more than 3 quarts so add a bit more.

No difference in leaving the top on or taking the fittings loose. There is no oil in them anyway and removing them makes taking the tank out easier as a rule.

Thank you that is the way I did it. How would you know if air got into the system? I am switching to 91 non ethanol so the lead build up should be gone in one oil change? there wasn't much in the bottom but this engine is new to me with no documentation on oil changes or tank cleaning but he told me it was done every 25 hours.

The last person might have just meant 25 hr. oil changes. I haven't seen anyone clean a tank every 25 hrs, but who knows.
