I need guidance from Rotax experts:
We need a Rotax 912 80 hp engine for use in the jungles of Papua, New Guinea-because there is only LOW octane fuel.

Question: We have offers for a Rotax 912 100 hp converted to low compression. Question we have is: Is it wise to convert this engine to low compression and use with low octane fuel?
Any expert guidance someone might have, OR expert we can talk to would be of great help.

Thank you. Jonathan Schwab

    Hi Jonathan,

I have never heard of someone doing this. I bet we'll have to get Rob to weigh in on this. I'm not even sure how you would go about doing it.
There has to be some 912UL engines out there for sale.

    Here are some under Barnstormers:

My BMW motorcycle (boxer) was de-tuned so that it could burn regular gas. The way it was done was by simply inserting an aluminum gasket (about 1mm thick) between the head and the case, thus increasing the volume of the combustion chamber. Worked great.

I know a guy who inserted a gasket between the block and the cilinder to reduce compression on the 100hp ULS and install a turbocharger.

I don't see any problem in reducing compression, but I'm not an expert.
