Ignition Trigger Gap Tolerance

The manual calls for the trigger coil airgap at .020". Does anyone know what tolerances the gap can have before the trigger won't fire? If gap was greater than .035", would that stop firing?
I have a spark coil that stopped firing on #1 & 2 bottom plugs and I found the gap to be excessive. Reset it closer to the .020" spec but still have issues.
If gap were less than .020", would that create a problem?
