My gearbox flange drips some oil. The previous owner had the unit R&R'd by an A&P (probably not experienced with Rotax). They used a different gasket making material. It's been less than 200 hours since overhaul. Should I overhaul at the same time or would that be a waste?

Do I need to buy the Rotax gearbox puller tool or is there an aftermarket one I can use.

    John, I have never had to use a puller to remove my gearbox and I'm guessing that if yours is leaking then it won't be adhered very well anyway. Make sure that you remove all of the bolts, there are a couple that are easy to forget. Personally I wouldn't bother overhauling it again unless you have a known problem. Gearbox removal is realatively straightforward and you can just remove it for service at the appropraite intervals.

    Thanks. Do you know what solvents I should have to clean the mating surface(s). I can look this up in the manual..

    Depends on what your A&P used: Loctite "chisel" paint stripper if he used something like Loctite 518 (dab it on with an acid brush)
    If he used a silicon based sealant use lacquer thinner, varsol or an automotive wax removed such as Dupont Prep-sol.

    I've had to pull all my gearboxes. I've never been able to just yank them off by hand. Here is an inexpensive homemade puller for the rare occasion you may need to pull the gearbox. Works like a charm. I made this about 20 years ago. It is just 1" angle iron. Two holes drilled in the ends for the bolts that attach it to the gearbox. The other two bolts that hold this together are not tight. Barely loose so the arms can move. There is a hole in the straight end piece to put a slide hammer into. You can buy a inexpensive slide hammer at Harbor freight. You just attach the puller to the gearbox with two bolts. They only need to be finger tight. Tap the slide hammer back a time or two and the gearbox slides back and you just pull it all the way off and tip it up so the small amount of oil doesn't drool out all over everything. Put a rag under the gearbox because some oil will come out when you first pull the gearbox back.. The gearbox puller will fold down for easy storage.
